  • Christchurch Brief History | PlanGo New Zealand

Discovering Christchurch: A Journey Through History, Art, & Resilience Nestled on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island, Christchurch is a city with a rich history and a vibrant cultural scene. Known as the "Garden City," Christchurch is also celebrated as the heart of the arts in New Zealand, offering a unique blend of historical landmarks, world-class galleries, and a resilient spirit that has seen the city rise from adversity. The Arrival of the First Settlers Christchurch's history begins long before European settlers arrived, with the region originally inhabited by the Ngāi Tahu iwi, the largest Māori tribe in the South Island. The area, known as Ōtautahi in Māori, was a place of abundant resources and a key site for food gathering and trading among the Māori people. In the mid-19th century, the first European settlers arrived, with the Canterbury Association establishing Christchurch as a planned city. The first four ships—The Charlotte Jane, The Randolph, The Sir George Seymour, and The Cressy—arrived in Lyttelton Harbour in 1850, bringing the pioneering settlers who laid the foundations of modern Christchurch. These early colonists, driven by the vision of creating an idealized English settlement, set about building a city that would soon become a thriving cultural hub. Lyttelton Timeball Station and Early Infrastructure One of the early symbols of Christchurch’s maritime importance was the Lyttelton Timeball Station, established in 1876. This historic landmark played a crucial role in helping ships set their chronometers accurately, ensuring safe navigation. Perched on the hills overlooking Lyttelton Harbour, the timeball station was an iconic part of the city’s landscape for over a century. Architectural Heritage and the Christchurch Cathedral Christchurch quickly became known for its stunning Gothic Revival architecture. The Christchurch Cathedral, located at the heart of the city in Cathedral Square, was a symbol of the city’s identity. Designed by architect George Gilbert Scott, the cathedral’s construction began in 1864 and was completed in 1904. The majestic spire and the building’s intricate stonework made it a central landmark, both physically and culturally. These photos show what the cathedral looked like before the Christchurch Earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. Among the many cultural icons that contribute to Christchurch's unique character is the Wizard of Christchurch, a beloved figure who has been a fixture in Cathedral Square since the 1970s. Known for his eccentric speeches and distinctive attire, the Wizard has become a symbol of the city’s quirky and creative spirit. The Wizard in 2007 - Photo Credit Helmut Pfau Christchurch as the Centre of the Arts As Christchurch grew, so did its reputation as the cultural and artistic heart of New Zealand. The Christchurch Arts Centre, originally the University of Canterbury, became a vital part of the city’s cultural fabric. Its neo-Gothic architecture housed theatres, music venues, and galleries, making it a bustling hub for artists, musicians, and performers. The Arts Centre played a crucial role in fostering creativity, hosting everything from classical concerts and theatrical performances to cutting-edge art exhibitions. The New Christchurch Art Gallery Adding to Christchurch's cultural richness is the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū, a stunning contemporary building that stands as a beacon of the city’s commitment to the arts. Opened in 2003, the gallery quickly became a focal point for art lovers, showcasing an impressive collection of both local and international works. The gallery’s striking glass facade is a modern contrast to the city’s historic architecture, symbolizing Christchurch’s blend of tradition and innovation. Gardens and the Garden City Christchurch’s moniker as the "Garden City" is well-deserved, with the Christchurch Botanic Gardens at the heart of this green legacy. Established in 1863, the gardens have been a tranquil retreat for both residents and visitors, featuring a stunning collection of native and exotic plants. Alongside Hagley Park, the gardens form the city’s green lung, offering spaces for recreation, reflection, and community gatherings. The Earthquakes and Christchurch's Resilience The peaceful rhythm of life in Christchurch was shattered by the devastating earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. The 2011 earthquake, in particular, caused significant damage to many of the city’s historical and cultural landmarks. The Christchurch Cathedral suffered the collapse of its spire, while the Arts Centre and other heritage buildings were also severely affected. The earthquakes, however, did not diminish Christchurch’s spirit; instead, they sparked a period of profound recovery and transformation. A Rebirth of Creativity and Innovation In the aftermath of the earthquakes, Christchurch has risen as a city of resilience and reinvention. While some historical landmarks were lost, the city has embraced modern architecture and new cultural initiatives. Pop-up stores and eateries, along with innovative public spaces, have brought new life to the city. The Arts Centre has been carefully restored, continuing its role as a vibrant cultural hub with music, theatre, and art at its core. Latimer Square, once a site of rescue efforts, now stands as a symbol of the city’s recovery, surrounded by new developments that honor the past while looking forward to the future. The city’s new eateries and modern establishments blend seamlessly with the historical buildings that remain, creating a dynamic mix of old and new. A New Chapter for Christchurch Today, Christchurch stands as a testament to resilience and reinvention. The city has not only rebuilt but reimagined itself, blending its rich history with a renewed focus on creativity and innovation. Whether you’re exploring the serene Botanic Gardens, visiting the new Christchurch Art Gallery, or attending a performance at the restored Arts Centre, you’ll discover a city that honors its past while eagerly embracing the future. • Auckland Brief History | PlanGo New Zealand

WELCOME TO Auckland Tāmaki Makaurau BOOK ACTIVITIES Auckland, circa 1903, Auckland, by Muir & Moodie. Purchased 1943. Te Papa (PA.000188) A Brief History of Auckland, New Zealand Pre-European Settlement and Maori Influence Auckland, known as Tāmaki Makaurau in Māori, has a rich history that predates European settlement. The area was first settled by the Māori, the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand, around 1350 AD. Tāmaki Makaurau, meaning "Tāmaki desired by many," reflects the region's fertile land and strategic location, making it a coveted area for various iwi (tribes). The Auckland isthmus was highly prized due to its volcanic soil, providing fertile land for agriculture. The Māori established numerous pā (fortified villages) on the volcanic cones that dominate the landscape, such as Maungawhau (Mount Eden), Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill), and Ōwairaka (Mount Albert). These pā served as defensive positions and were central to Māori life, with extensive gardens surrounding them to support the population. Early European Contact and Settlement The first European to sight the Auckland area was Lieutenant James Cook in 1769, during his first voyage to New Zealand. However, it wasn't until the early 19th century that European missionaries and traders began to arrive. The Ngāti Whātua, a dominant iwi in the region, initially welcomed these newcomers, seeing potential benefits in trade and new technologies. In 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and various Māori chiefs, including those from Ngāti Whātua. This treaty laid the groundwork for British sovereignty over New Zealand. Following this, Governor William Hobson selected Auckland as the capital of New Zealand in 1841, naming it after George Eden, Earl of Auckland. Growth and Development Auckland's early growth was rapid, driven by its status as the capital (until 1865) and its strategic location for trade and shipping. The city's deep natural harbors, Waitematā and Manukau, facilitated commerce and attracted settlers. By the mid-19th century, Auckland was a bustling port town, exporting timber, kauri gum, and other natural resources. The gold rushes in the 1860s, particularly in the Coromandel and Thames regions, further fueled Auckland's expansion, bringing an influx of European settlers and boosting the local economy. Infrastructure development, such as roads, bridges, and public buildings, progressed swiftly during this period. Modern Auckland Today, Auckland is New Zealand's largest city, a vibrant, multicultural metropolis home to over 1.6 million people. It is an economic powerhouse, with key industries including finance, commerce, education, and tourism. Auckland's landscape is dotted with reminders of its Māori heritage, from the preserved volcanic cones to the marae (meeting grounds) and cultural centers that celebrate Māori traditions and history. The city is also a hub for Pacific Islander communities, adding to its rich cultural tapestry. Auckland continues to evolve, balancing its role as a modern, global city with a deep respect for its indigenous roots and natural environment. This dynamic interplay between tradition and progress defines Auckland's unique character and enduring appeal. Cultural Significance The Māori influence in Auckland is not only historical but also vibrant in contemporary society. Traditional customs, language (te reo Māori), and values are increasingly integrated into the city's fabric. Festivals like Matariki (Māori New Year) and events at Auckland War Memorial Museum celebrate and preserve Māori culture. Auckland's history is a tapestry woven from the threads of its Māori heritage and European settlement, creating a city that is both ancient and modern. From its early days as a sought-after region for Māori iwi to its current status as a bustling metropolis, Auckland's story is one of resilience, diversity, and growth. Most of our tour operators will provide you with historical information along your journey. If you are interested in history and culture in this region, we have a wide range of activities, here are some to get you started. Click here for more activities. MORE ACTIVITIES

  • Queenstown Culture & History | PlanGo New Zealand

WELCOME TO Q ueenstown Tāhuna BOOK ACTIVITIES The Historical Journey of Queenstown: From Maori Trails to Adventure Capital Early Beginnings and Maori Heritage (1200 AD - 1850s) 1200 AD: Polynesians were the first to explore the Queenstown area, primarily for hunting. The cold climate discouraged permanent settlement. Later Centuries: Maori from the West Coast traveled to Queenstown in search of pounamu (greenstone), a precious resource used for tools and ornaments. The area was known as Tāhuna, translating to "shallow bay." 1856: The first European glimpse of Lake Wakatipu was by Scotsman Nathanael Chalmers, guided by Reko, a Maori chief. Settlement and Development (1860 - 1869) 1860: William Gilbert Rees and Nicholas von Tunzelmann were the first Europeans to settle in the area. They navigated the challenging Crown Range, establishing farms and beginning a quiet pastoral life. 1862: The discovery of alluvial gold in the Arrow River by Jack Tewa, a Maori shepherd, sparked a significant gold rush, attracting miners from as far as Australia and California. Queenstown quickly evolved from a shanty town on Rees' farm to a bustling center of activity. The Gold Rush Impact (1862 - 1870s) Early 1860s: The gold rush led to the construction of infrastructure such as the Queen’s Arms Hotel, which later became Eichardt’s Hotel. 1864: As the gold supply dwindled, miners moved on to the West Coast, prompting the government to invite Chinese miners to the Otago goldfields, who significantly contributed to the local economy through various trades. Expansion and Tourism (1870s - 1940s) Mid-1870s: The development of hotels and the establishment of the Dunedin to Kingston railway facilitated the growth of tourism. Queenstown became a favored summer destination for hiking and relaxation. 1947: The Mount Cook Company introduced winter tourism by hiring a ski instructor and installing a tow rope at Coronet Peak, marking the beginning of Queenstown's winter sports scene. Modern Era and Adventure Tourism (1950s - Present) 1960: Commercial jet boat rides began, adding to the array of adventurous activities available. 1988: The launch of the world’s first commercial bungee jumping site by AJ Hackett and Henry Van Asch solidified Queenstown's reputation as the "Adventure Capital of the World." Post-1950s: Queenstown has seen exponential growth, now offering a wide range of activities that attract tourists year-round.
